Exclusive: New Kill List Poster
'They deserve to suffer'Could director Ben Wheatley be catapulting from Kill List to the A-list? Don't be against it, and definitely don't bet against him making a similar breakthrough to fellow Brit newcomers Duncan Jones and Gareth Edwards. Like Jones, he's a Cannes Lion winner in his previous life in advertising; like Edwards, he's a technical whiz with a DIY ethos; like both of them, he's seriously talented. Wheatley cut his teeth on taut Brit thriller Down Terrace, and the buzz building around his second feature would wake a dog on Pandora. Kill List has a classy new poster to add to the fever pitch. The film follows ex-hitman Jay (Neil Maskell) back from working in the Ukraine and under pressure to make ends meet. It's then that he's approached by an old mucker to take one final, lucrative contract. Before you can say oh-my-god-don't-do-it-it's-that-one-final-job-thing! , he signs on the dotted line. In blood. {Kill List Quad}. Jay is then given the titular hit list and told to act on it. As you can imagine - and as the tagline suggests with stark economy - he's not popping round to their houses with Easter eggs. But who are the names on the list and what do they have in common? Does that strange iconography on the poster have anything to do with it or has CND rebranded? All will be revealed when Kill List is out on September 2. Add it to your movie list. Do it, do it now.

Claypot Curry Killers
An Astro Shaw presentation of a Tayangan Unggul, Hadir Dinamuk production. (International sales: Astro Shaw, Selangor, Malaysia.) Produced by Gayatri Su Lin Pillai, Hazil Izham Ismail. Directed, written by James Lee.With: Steve Yap, Debbie Goh, Mandy Chen, Olivia Kang, Pearlly Chua, Jeff Chin, Wong Wai-hoong, Ernest Chong, Elvis, Sunny Pang, Alan Cheong, Kok Jia-xian. (Mandarin, Cantonese dialogue)Although inspired by the Grand Guignol recipe of "Sweeney Todd," James Lee ultimately cooks up a splattery muddle in "Claypot Curry Killers." Having moved on from flavorless mellers ("Before We Fall in Love Again"), the Malaysian writer-helmer continues a dalliance with horror begun with "Histeria," with the same studied lack of skill demonstrated in his previous fest fillers. Pic has yet to be released domestically due to censorship issues, but even in more lax territories, its amateurism will limit its prospects. After discovering her drunken husband sexually abusing one of her three daughters, street hawker Mrs. Chew (Pearlly Chua) kills her spouse and serves up his remains to unsuspecting food-stall customers. Yarn leaps forward 10 years to establish that man meat has made her wealthy, but one of Chew's daughters now has a bloodlust that just won't quit. While Lee ladles on the gore and cribs jokes from Tarantino, his direction is as stiff as his lurching script, and neither does the marooned thesps any favors. Pic shows the same disregard for sound quality that made Lee's previous films so grating.Camera (color, DigiBeta), Mohammed Helmi Yusof; editor, Chris Khoo; music, Peter Toe; art director, Nazrul Asraff Mahzan. Reviewed at PiFan Film Festival (World Fantastic Cinema), July 15, 2011. Running time: 97 MIN. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Bubba Smith, Football Star and 'Police Academy' Actor, Dies
Bubba Smith, a football star who went on to play a lovable lug in the Police Academy films and Miller Lite commercials, was found dead Wednesday at his Baldwin Hills home in Los Angeles. He was 66. Smith's body was discovered by a caretaker, police said. Officials believe he died of natural causes. The 6-foot-7 Charles Aaron Smith was a defensive lineman and future College Football Hall of Famer at Michigan State, then played nine seasons in the pros with the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers from 1967-76. PHOTOS:Hollywood's Notable Deaths In the slapstick Police Academy films of the 1980s, Smith's character, the aptly named Moses Hightower, hovered over his fellow misfit cadets in the franchise's first film in 1984 and its five sequels. A florist joining the academy, Hightower had immense strength but was the most soft-spoken of all the characters that included Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), Eugene Tackleberry (David Graf), Larvelle Jones (Michael Winslow) and Zed McGlunk (Bobcat Goldthwait). Smith also starred in the short-lived television series Blue Thunder, partnering with Dick Butkus, another former NFL defensive star, and had regular roles in such other series as Semi-Tough, Open All Night and Half Nelson. He appeared in Blood River, a 2010 indie film. In the 1970s, Smith appeared in several Miller Lite commercials alongside the likes of Butkus, Rodney Dangerfield and Larry Csonka. In one memorable spot, he rips off the top of a beer can and he says, "I also love the easy-opening can." As a senior with Michigan State, Smith played in a legendary November 1966 game against Notre Dame in which Fighting Irish coach Ara Parseghianelected to run out the clock in a 10-10 tie, thus preserving his team's No. 1 ranking. Both teams finished the season undefeated, but the Spartans finished second in the polls. In East Lansing, Mich., Smith was extremely popular, with fans chanting, "Kill, Bubba, Kill." Michigan State retired his No. 95 jersey in 2006. The first overall selection in the 1967 NFL draft by the Colts, Smith, a native of Beaumont, Texas, won the Super Bowl V with Baltimore two years after losing the title game to the New York Jets and Joe Namath in a memorable upset.
